In the book My Brother Sam is dead, a boy named Tim tells about his family’s life during the Revolutionary War. He lived in a town that was very loyal to King George. His biggest problem though was that his father was a loyalist and his brother, Sam, was joining the war to fight against the British. Who is right? Sam is. First, Sam was right to fight for his own country. In the book it quotes “ If they won’t let us be free, we have to fight. They’re 3,000 miles away. How can they make laws for us?” This quote shows that the colonists broke away for freedom. They do not want the british, who is 3,000 miles away, still controlling them and they will fight if they have to. They don’t need Sam to keep everything together. The book quotes “ Father was planning his usual trip to Verplanks Point and this year for the first time I was going with him.” This quote shows that they can still do all of the things they do and can have Tim step up and prove that he can be responsible and mature too. The book also says “ Business was good in the store too.” This shows that everything ran the same and they were able to keep everything going even with Sam gone. Third, Sam was right to fight against the people that were hurting his hometown. In the book it says “ Ned’s head jumped off his head and popped into the air. I never saw it fall.” This quote shows that the British were killing the innocent people in his hometown and is why Sam should fight against them. The book also quotes “ Kill them!
