How would you feel if your father had to go to war when he didn’t want to? How would you react if you got a letter in the mail saying that your father had died? What would you do if you couldn’t go outside for a whole week? These are some things that Karl Friedman thought about when his father died. This book was special because in the beginning of the book, Karl was supporting the Nazis and Hitler. He even wanted to fight in the war along side Hitler. Towards the end of the book however, after seeing what Hitler and the Nazi were really about, Karl retaliated against the Nazi and was in a group fighting against the them. The story takes place in Germany in 1941. My Brother’s Secret was written in the first person. The important characters in this book were, Karl Friedman, Lisa Hernz, Stefan Friedman, and Kriminalinspektor Wolff. Karl Friedman was twelve years old. Like all the other kids his age, Karl was training in the Hitler Youth program to become a soldier and help fight in the war. The War Games were games where you had to capture the enemy’s flag. You had to do whatever it takes to win, even “kill”. Karl received a silver medal for his bravery and courage. One day after Hitler Youth, Karl’s mother received a letter informing them that their father had died in combat. Karl’s mother went into a state of shock and became very ill. So Karl and his older brother Stefan, along with their mother, stayed at their grandparents house. One night, Stefan was caught sneaking around at night with a group handing out anti-Hitler propaganda. He was caught by Kriminalinspektor Wolff and sent to prison. Karl and Lisa tried to break Stefan out. The night before Karl and Lisa went to go get Stefan, the British bombed their town. On their way to the prison, they came across an unexploded bomb. They carefully made their way past it. When Wolff found out that Karl and Lisa helped Stefan escape, he started to hunt them down. Karl, Lisa, and Stefan could hear Wolff chasing them. They ran to a nearby cemetery to hide. Then they heard a loud explosion. Wolff had hit the unexploded bomb.
