My Capstone project is a website that describes how Asian Americans are portrayed as a model minority. The topic of Asian Americans has not been covered a lot in mainstream history courses and was briefly covered in the DOC series, so the model minority label is ambiguous. My project is divided into three sections that will explain what a model minority is and the effects of the label. The first section provides a definition and significance of being a model minority. The second section describes discrimination of Asian Americans in the past that helps to give the context for the model minority title. The third section describes the implications of being a model minority. This project was made to show what a model minority is and the significance of being labelled as a model minority by analyzing historical events and the current day. The historical portion of the project provides the context of the model minority status. Similarly to other minority groups, Asian Americans were seen as inferior. There was a large focus on education as education led to better skills which implied more job opportunities. As wealth is a big determinant for class, the push for education meant better class mobility, so newer generation Asian Americans were able to move up the social ladder. The emphasis on moving up the social ladder by working hard is hegemonic because it follows the dominant ideology of the American Dream. The American Dream consists of working hard to achieve more and succeed in America. The push for education worked as younger Asian Americans generally were able to attain more wealth and become part of the higher class compared to other minority groups.
