Following winter break, I plan to reset my classroom for all three grades. Being assigned three different grade levels, with three different subjects and no curriculum has been a challenge as a first-year teacher. While subject matter and creating units from scratch has been stressful, classroom management has been my biggest challenge so far. My biggest concern moving forward is breaking poor habits all classes have developed. I will use strategies taught throughout this course to create a concrete plan for myself and my students. I will reset the classroom to include clear and high expectations for all students both academically and behaviorally. To deter this, I will be more consistent with consequences such as detentions and “infractions”. Infractions will be used as consequences for behavior. I am adopting some strategies used by my middle school colleges. Students are given a warning and then strikes after redirection, three strikes result in a detention after school. As of now, I have noticed myself unfairly giving out warning and strikes as to not trigger some of my explosive anger students. To combat this bias, I plan to calmly provide a one on one redirection with all students. Many of my students, throughout all grade levels, struggle with significant social and emotional behavioral issues. As a school, one of our goals to increase students accepting responsibility for their actions. I would like to tackle this specifically within my classroom as well. I have noticed students becoming frustrated or angry when work is difficult. Rather than ignoring the emotions, or moving past them, I’d like to create an environment where students are able to work with those emotions either privately or with the class. I am working to implement a “take a break” station where students may sit and reflect. I’d also like to model using the station
