Although Bram Stoker uses the word ‘prey’ figuratively through Dracula, when used literally it is at its most chilling. Stoker is using ‘prey’ commonly like anybody in our modern times would. In Dracula, author Bram Stoker has interesting ways of connecting various different instances to Count Dracula. He does so by using the motif of colours; specifically red, black and white. Each of these colours is used to describe different things well conveying one general message. Black, red and white relate to Dracula and connect to his character, while each having a purposeful meaning. Connecting to Dracula’s character, the motif of black symbolizes darkness and evil.
The scene of Johnathon Harker meeting Dracula for the first time plays a key component into the plotline of the story. It adds the theme of intrigue while at the same time suspense, without the introduction scene there would be no storyline to follow after. Harker’s introduction provides the essence and reason for the rest of Dracula to be told which will include the remaining aspects of romanticism, mystery, and dark elements to unfold. Throughout the scene the focus of foreshadowing is being explored along with visual captivation using monotonic colors to add to the atmosphere of dark surrealism the movie provides. The way each woman is described frames them directly against one another, because even if they are close friends, a woman’s worth is determined by how she is compared to other women. Female sexuality, something that was unacceptable and under the surface of society, it is exposed in these writings. The earlier readings such as Carmilla, as well as the poem of Christabel question the boundaries. The texts from these literature pieces contain passages of female sexuality and the passages contain phrases that hint towards the social taboos. In the era when women were thought of mere objects these pieces decide to give them a personality or at least a voice that can express desire, a voice that states women have a purpose apart from pleasing men.
