My Philosophy of Coaching For a long time, I’ve wanted to become a coach. Someone my players could look up to and go to for guidance. I have always wanted to try things my way and be the one who leads the team into battle each and every game. As an athlete, I never had a good coach. I never had that coach that I could look up to who always led by example. For many of the sports I participated in we were set up to fail. We had no practices, no real coach and no real talent. Through my negative experiences in sport, I now know what not to do. What I have gone through has motivated me to do whatever it takes to make a difference in their lives, not only as athletes, but as people. Nothing is more embarrassing for an athlete than when a parent or relative makes a scene in front of others whether that may be others watching the game, your teammates or your coaches. For me laying out ground rules would be a very important step in preventing that. When I coach, I plan to hold a meeting every year before the start of the season and go over what is appropriate and what is inappropriate behavior when your son or daughter is participating in sports. I expect each and every parent and player to sign saying they agree to the rules and regulation, as will I, and in doing so we will all hold each other accountable. I want to form a great relationship with my athletes, their parents and the community. Getting to know each one of my athletes is something that I believe is good for team chemistry and also think that can and will definitely help when it comes to coaching them. Sportsmanship has always been a large part of my game as an athlete and for me as a coach, I expect good sportsmanship out of all my players. There is no excuse for bad sportsmanship and in any case where there may be some, punishment will be dealt with accordingly. Unsportsmanlike conduct has no room in sports and will not be tolerated. Along with sportsmanship, a coach should be a poster for good sportsmanship. I believe coaches should be held to the highest standard and should strive to be mentors and role models for their athletes. They should lead by example and almost be like a second father figure in my eyes. I personally never had that with any of my coaches but I think that would have been really cool to form a bond like that with a
