My early childhood experiences up to my current college experiences molded me into the person I am today. I’ve acquired strength through my parents divorce, dealing with alcoholic relatives, and going through life’s daily challenges. These tough times allowed for me to mature as a writer and a person. Other experiences much lighter than those tough times have taught me to be grateful and never take things for granted. I only have one life, and I want to spend it doing something I love, which is documenting Native American traditions and culture. This burning desire pushed me to be the best journalist I can be, which ultimately brought me to apply to be a fellow. Being selected as a fellow would allow me to help me gain the confidence I need as a journalist about to go in the real world. I hope to gain all the knowledge I can, so I can make a powerful impact through my journalistic writing. My college knowledge has made me aware of the root causes of fake news. First of all, as a journalist, I check my facts and double check them again. It is vital to ensure that the story is completely accurate, so the reader can trust the paper. After all, what is a newspaper, if it isn’t credible? Thus if I were to get facts from online, I would make sure to check the website's credibility, and double check the facts once more. In this digital age, online sources can be misleading, especially social media. Therefore, I would steer clear of facts I see on social media sites, unless I check out the situation myself.
