Community has a wide range of definitions and characteristics, but this essay focuses on communities of interest and engagement, not just place. While place certainly creates a sense of community, interest creates stronger bonds between individuals that bring them together. When people are part of a community, they share values, traditions, and history that binds people together into a whole, rather than a collection of singular beings. As a student at Methodist University, I find myself a member of a variety of communities: in class, at the golf course, or at the rec center with my friends. Regardless of which community I am a part of, each of them provides me with something different, yet they all carry the same importance in my life.

Broussard states, “Methodist University is a great school if you want a top-tier education while getting involved in a tight-knit community. From the connections on campus to the diversity of people and cultures, there is nothing quite like Methodist,” which demonstrates the various places you can find community at Methodist University. Similarly to a majority of my friends in the PGM program, I am a long way from home above the Mason Dixon line, which means that we all share the same experience of going far from familiarity. We all took the same leap of faith to leave behind every aspect of our lives that became a part of our individual personalities and transformed into new people, while keeping our roots with us.
