My Definition Of Literacy Essay

When it comes to learning in school, for some people it’s easy and for other it can be challenging. But for me it was challenging because I’m hearing impaired, which means that I have lost about 30-45% of my hearing in both ears. My definition of literacy is a way for people to be more creative on how they improve their reading and writing skills I have been hearing impaired since birth and I have worn bi-lateral hearing aids form a very early age. So, when it came to education I struggled at several levels, which was Homeschooled, Middle School and High School.
I was homeschooled for five years. My mother was my teacher, which I cherish because I could sleep in when other student had to get up early for public school. Being Homeschooled was challenging for me because I had to be creative on how I learn because when it came to certain topics like reading, math, and english, I struggle because I could not hear the words or understand the concepts that was being taught. In elementary school I, would receive extra time on tests and one on one help with homework. I would be taken out of class to get additional help in certain topics like math and English or other projects. When I got to Middle school they put me in a program called IEP (Individual Education Plan). An IEP means that each student has their own specific educational targets to hit. To have an IEP, each student must be identified through an evaluation process that meets State and Federal guidelines, as defined by the American Disabilities Act. (and the state interoperation of the federal law). Having the IEP allowed me to get an aid in some of my main classes. They would help me to understand assignments or any projects that I was having difficulty understanding. This was a wonderful resource for me because this helped improve my writing and reading
