The need for global sustainability has also been advocated for by my parents, teachers, and others, illustrating to me the need to have resources which are recyclable and conserved. The inclusion of science in my scholastic endeavors has consistently challenged my thinking and aids in my understanding of the world. My own life experiences have instilled in me to pursue a career in STEM, particularly in biochemistry. Sustainability and renewability have always been an integral aspect of my life as a result of the world I have grown up in. In a society extremely dependent on fossil fuels and nonrenewable energy sources, I began to see that the means through which we live now cannot continue in the years to come. By shadowing at the Arbor Free Clinic, a no-cost community clinic for underserved and underprivileged people, I received a firsthand perspective as to exactly what it means to not have healthcare. I witnessed as one of the patients described the pain radiating throughout her body, her attempt to find a cure in China, and her eventual return to the United States. Throughout the program, I heard about people’s mistrust of healthcare establishments and insensitive doctors, driven by their careers and not their humanity. With my family’s own experience with my grandfather passing away after hospital negligence, it became clear that I wanted to be a part of the solution to the issues of healthcare institutions. Now, it has become a goal of mine to find a way in which I can improve the world around me, especially as it relates to people’s health. By combining my love of biochemistry with my desire to foster interpersonal relationships, I believe that I can improve people’s healthcare and general condition anywhere around the
