The famous Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The quote explains that the only way to find your true character is dedicating time to others. I have taken part in a large number of service opportunities that have helped me find my true character including tending to sick patients at Cooper Hospital, caring for animals at The Philadelphia Animal Hospital, and being an assistant baseball coach for Our Lady of Hope Regional School. It is written in God’s message to help and serve those who are sick. Helping ill people at Cooper Hospital allowed me to enter into an experience unlike any other. I would often bring the patients water or even just sit and talk with them. I have learned that even through the terrible times that these patients are experiencing, I was able to give them hope. The patients would often tell me a very exciting or interesting event that happened in their lives and to see them smiling through all of the pain was truly uprising to my soul. I cared for sick animals, sanitized the surgery rooms, and prepped the examination rooms for the doctors. My time there has truly opened my mind to loving and caring. I have learned about the actual nature of these two qualities. Serving there, you can genuinely see the human emotion of love. Caring for the animals gave me a sense of self satisfaction. I would often think of these animals as close relatives. This has unequivocally shaped my character and has initiated my Caritas project, Operation K9 Kevlar. This project is raising awareness in the community about the safety of our K9 officers. Operation K9 Kevlar hopes to protect working canines the same way our troops and civilian law enforcement officers are protected by providing them with much needed Kevlar
