My interest in social work could date back to senior middle school. When seeing the news reporting primary school students’ life in Guizhou, I organized a donation in my grade to collect clothes and books for children living in the remote area of China. I managed to persuade all my classmates and teachers to join in, even when everyone was so absorbed in preparing for the University Entrance Examination. During carrying out this project, I felt so fulfilled and got to realize there was more I could do to help. That was when I decided to conduct charity work, but not until I choose social work as my major, did I realize how I could realize my expectations in an empowering way. Its mission is to enhance human well-being and promote human rights and social and economic justice for people who are disadvantaged to achieve an equitable, healthy, and productive society, which is highly consistent with my values. Sharing this mission, I am able to learn how to play a part in improving the life situation of vulnerable groups, especially in mainland China, where limited social work resources are allocated to them. I find UW Madison also attaches great importance to respecting students’ rights, which is always emphasized in the process of social work. Here the spirit of inquiry thrives, and respect for all persons and an understanding of difference and diversity are practiced. Here, I am not only able to be exposed to interdisciplinary knowledge and profession in the classroom, in field about my future career, but also learn to meet profession's missions and core values, as well as the ethical standards. At the same time, I would be exposed to a more multiple cultural environment, with people from all over the world, and I think this is a great challenge for me, as we have different languages, habits, and views. But I also regard it as a closer step to my desired career, to get along with different groups and enhance relationship and life quality of them as well. I think communication with people from other culture could surmount obstacles, eulogize differences, stimulate inspirations and bring about instructive effects. In this thick academic atmosphere, I could learn different point of views from different community. Thus, I would make unremitting endeavor to study about the culture and try my best to communicate with them and make friends. Although difference may cause conflict, but as long as it is handled appropriately, it also serve as a dynamic for me to better understand different culture, not to mention it is essential for social worker to know about
