If a person's heart is beating, and lungs are breathing, they cannot escape the journey through life. There are many components of a person's life that are apart of this journey. They have relationships, desires, and lessons learned. These components are what shapes a person into who they are, and keeps a person growing into who they are meant to be. Relationships are a key component in the journey through life. Maya Angelou did not have very many close emotional relationships. People were in and out of her life. She did have strong bonds, even though they were not too emotional. Maya Angelou was closest to her brother. There was no one she loved more than her brother. They were best friends. They told each other everything, and spent a lot of time together. But then, Bailey grew up. He began to make his own friends. And eventually, in the end, moved away. It was a sad experience for Maya, but it was amazing how fast she got over it. Soon after, she was focused on getting a job, and moving on with her life. Maybe, at a young age, she realized that sometimes a person has to let their loved ones go and wish them well. Momma was never really emotionally attached to Maya, but she sure was firm and protective. For example, she stood up for Maya whenever she had a toothache and the white dentist said "I would rather stick my hand in a dog's mouth than in a nigger's" (Angelou 189). This caused Momma to become angry. No one treated Momma or her granddaughter, Maya like that. Momma had a secret that was soon to be revealed. When Momma confronted the dentist, it was like she had power over him, even though she was black and he was white. She didn't use this power unless under certain circumstances. When her granddaughter. Maya, was being hurt, though, it was time for her to use it. Even though she was firm, and not touchy-feely, it did not mean she did not love Maya. They still had a bond. She soon had to leave
