I have gone on road trips through the west coast and midwest, I have stayed in 29 states, and gone to 17 different countries. Throughout my travels I have never found myself in a more beautiful place then being in the Pacific Northwest. We have an amazing environment around us with wildlife, mountains, lakes, oceans, rivers, and trees. Yet it might not be like this forever. With global climate change the environment as we know it, will change; but I want to do everything in my power to keep the Pacific Northwest the way I love it. Being an environmental science major I would be able to peruse many different types of jobs. I might be a park ranger in one of the three national parks, five national forests, or numerous state parks, keeping wildlife, pant life, and human life safe from each other. Not only that but I could help contemplate the benefit and disadvantages of logging areas or making dams. As the earth’s temperatures rise, glaciers and ice burgs begin to melt, raising ocean’s sea levels. Seattle, being a city on the water, will have problems of flooding, even more than we see now. With my major I can help minimize the damage of flooding by creating flood barriers and letting people know about this inevitable threat. Another thing Washington has which is unique to this state is Mount St. Helens. After erupting in 1980 the area around the mountain has been relatively untouched so we can see first hand nature’s rebirth and how an ecosystem can come back from a disaster. There are countless careers I could be doing with an environmental science degree, but if nothing else I will always be environmentally conscious and make the everyday choice to keep my lasting footprint small. All in all, the Pacific Northwest is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and with a degree in environmental science I will help keep it that
