In the poem “My Mother Pieced Quilts,” by Teresa Palomo Acosta and the song “Coat of Many Colors,” written by Dolly Parton, there are many similarities and differences between the two. The speakers show the sentimental value and the true meaning of what their mothers make for their children. In the poem, “My Mother Pieced Quilts,” in lines 57 and 58, the speaker shows the significance of the quits her mother made, stating, “Knotted with love / the quilts sing on.” The speaker of the poem said that the quilt was “Knotted with love.” Saying this, the speaker loves what her mother is doing and has so many memories with each piece of leftover scrap that was put together to make the whole thing. In the poem, the speaker describes multiple different fabrics her mother uses, stating, “But it was just that every morning I awoke to these / October ripened canvases / passed my hand across their cloth faces / and began to wonder how you pieced / all these together / these strips of gentle communion cotton and flannel / nightgowns / wedding organdies / dime-store velvets.” While reading this, the reader could infer that the quilt was not made of perfect fabric that was just purchased from the store but was scraps from random pieces of clothing. On the other hand, in the song, Parton tells the reader what the coat was made out of, explaining, “I recall a box of rags that someone gave us / And how my momma put the rags to use / There were rags of many colors / Every piece was small / And I didn't have a coat.” In the song, Parton tells the reader or listener that the coat her mother made was made out of old rags from a box. So people who usually bought their coats from stores would probably think that the coat made out of rags was perhaps not something they would wear.
