My Personal Leadership Philosophy

I believe that leadership is the ability to influence a group toward achieving a vision or set of goals. One of the most distinctive examples of leadership that I have observed is the COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg. In her Ted Talk in 2010, Sandberg said “we do not live in the world that our mothers and grandmothers lived in.” Her dedication to empowering women in the workforce has inspired me to not underestimate my ability to make a difference. She encourages women to not hold back, to ask for promotions, to sit at the table, and to ask the tough questions. Sandberg used the example of wanting her daughter to have the choice to not just succeed, but to be liked for her accomplishments. To be an effective leader, a person should be charismatic in order to ignite passion and motivation from within others. Leadership is not measured by success, but rather it is most critical when issues arise. I believe that a leader must be a driven, strong delegator who can manage others with a transparent yet positive attitude. Additionally, an effective leader not only seeks to gain personal success, but also aims to develop future leaders while recognizing the successes of others. Either through motivation or empowerment, a leader can help people see their goals and visions come to fruition. As Omicron Delta Kappa prides itself as the national honor society of leadership, the society’s core membership values such as exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus and community life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship, and dedication to democratic ideals, are also characteristics that I possess. Ultimately, my goal is to finish college with a deep network of peers, colleagues, and professionals that enable me to achieve both my personal and professional goals. In turn, I hope to help my fellow classmates succeed along with me. I want to become a member of Omicron Delta Kappa because I wish to enhance my leadership skills to be a more well-rounded citizen and person. Academics are very important to me as I am on a scholarship at Loyola, but community service, athletics, and friendships are just as important. While leadership philosophies may differ, my personal code of ethics is centered around three main pillars: integrity, compassion, and a positive attitude. Joining Omicron Delta Kappa will give me the opportunity to learn from other diverse members who are students, faculty, and alumni of all ages.
