In this essay I will be discussing honor and its value relating to the first chapter we read in “My Sister Made of Light”, then my thoughts on “Muslim women in Minang”, and then talking about my thoughts about the class and any questions I still need addressed. What is Honor? There isn’t an exact definition of honor, because it can mean many things. I can honor my parents by listening to them. But I can honor myself, for following my personal values. I also can hold someone in high respect, by honoring them. So, can a woman show her husband honor by allowing for him to discipline her? Is there honor in Violence? A matrilineal society is “a societal system in which each person is identified with their matriline —their mother’s lineage” (Wiki). I was actually surprised there was such thing as a matrilineal society, since it’s not common. But basically in the video we watched a girl who was around my age, very active and involved in physical activities, travel to Minangkabau highlands, Indonesia. She talked about growing up in a Muslim household that expected her to support men in their quest for power, while the men continue to take positions of high status. Then she visited Minang and it was like a wake-up call for her, seeing women in positions of power, since it’s a women’s job to keep order in the community. I personally loved the film, it gave me a broad perspective on the Muslim women of Minang and it made me yearn to see how a matrilineal society would be like in America. I was expecting most of my fellow classmates to feel happy that such a society exists in which women are in power and have a high status in society other than baby producers and housekeepers. So, imagine my surprise when I hear repeatedly my classmates say “Oppression” and “That’s sad for the men”. I highly doubt most men are feeling sorry for women being underdogs, so why should we feel sorry that one society, women are at an advantage. This had me thinking about if my classmates were really sad for the men in Minang or if the first time they hear that a woman have succeeded in achieving a status of higher or equal value to men ,woman don’t know how to
