During my work experience at the University Of Portsmouth Dental Academy, I observed the procedures of a variety of students from the field of dentistry. This included the dental hygienist, therapist, nurses and dental students treating real NHS patients. Through the work experience I was able to develop communication skills by talking to students, academics and patients about their experience in dentistry to give me a better understanding. I also participated as part of a team, providing practical help with the nurses in preparation for the next NHS patient such as passing the equipment the nurse prepared to the hygienist. The phantom head room was used by the hygienists/therapists to improve their manual dexterity with its realistic mannequins. This was beneficial for me as this gave me an insight to how it feels treating a patient. This was by being able to using the dental instruments, positioning and my dexterity skills to work my way around the phantom head and inspect the teeth. I witnessed a great deal of procedures including root canal, scaling, polishing, fillings and tooth extraction. I recognised a difference between the UK and Moroccan dentists which was the price charges but having said, the patients were entitled to longer appointments with hygienists, allowing an enhanced discussion about treatment options. Furthermore, the hygienist saw a small range of patients which were only Moroccans with varying medical conditions whereas the UK had a greater range of ethnic backgrounds hence a variety of behavioural methods had to be altered and adapted to suit the individual's needs, therefore both countries have their pros and cons.
