My Writing Goals

In Oregon, there are an estimated 52,120 people employed as book, magazine or journal editor(“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). My goal is that within 10 years I will be working in one of these positions. It will take at least a Bachelor of Arts degree, very hard work and a substantial move from my hometown to achieve this goal. I have come this conclusion through many hours of thinking on what I wanted to do and achieve after high school; I knew that it had to be something that I was passionate about and would enjoy doing. Otherwise going to school and spending money on a degree that would lead me to a career I didn’t feel a passion for would be a waste. I realized that I am passionate about books and writing. There isn’t a time when I’m not in the middle of one book if not more. Books, music and TV shows are three of my favorite things and I knew that I wanted to incorporate at least one of them into my career. For many people, as well as myself, reading is an outlet. It is a way to escape my current life and enter a new world, time period and life. Whenever I feel really stressed or upset, reading can help; the journeys that writers take readers on help them leave their lives for a little while and become the characters. After reading the negative feelings are usually gone and I feel I am refueled. I aspire to find a career that will enable me to help others experience the passion that I feel for literature. I want to be a part of creating something that could help someone feel better about life. I thought about music but in the end I settled on books. With modern technology this is being changed, the main area that this is changing is in the news industry. Before there were online forums and news websites everything that was published went through an editor who would review the material. Now different news agencies have websites where they can immediately post stories and updates(“Editing for Today’s”). The internet is also changing how people read books. Instead of editing things on paper with a pen they are now being edited on the computer and published to websites. Another thing that has helped the industry is email and online editing websites, these items make communicating with people and showing or changing edits with people much easier. As technology advances editors must keep up with each new thing that could possibly change their job, they must learn how to use it and incorporate it into their large
