Curiosity led me to explore various subjects during my undergraduate career at Humboldt State University. Constantly changing the course of my education ultimately began to hinder my academics, which led to uncertainty about my future. I felt the pressure. I could hear the time clock running down, yelling, “Vivian, pick a major already!” As I considered every possible subject, it became evident that my strong involvement in sports could develop into a career path. Although I identified the subject of my career, searching for the right program became my next battle. As part of my Leisure Planning course, I was fortunate enough to receive firsthand experience by planning and coordinating a March Madness Basketball event in collaboration with Special Olympics. The high school athletes participating in the tournament have intellectual disabilities and as a collective group it was important to plan the event in a manner that was accessible to all.
Collaborating with Special Olympics was one of the most memorable experiences in my college career. Because of this sports organization, I was even more inspired to continue my pursuit for a master’s degree in Sports Management. It is my goal to continue my involvement in sports organizations that continuously provide opportunities for urban youth athletes, athletes of all abilities and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle. Attaining a master at your institution will allow me to continue my involvement in the sports community, while making the dreams of young athletes come
