Throughout the years, I have been fortunate to receive many opportunities to learn about and serve my community in many different ways. One of my earliest memories of service comes from the Virginia Living Museum, where I began working as a Touch Pool volunteer when I was eleven years old. It was there that I began to learn what service meant to me. To serve was to teach, and to bring my knowledge and ideas to new people every time I volunteered. It meant becoming a part of my community and giving back to the people I cared about the most. To this day, service still means the same thing to me. I know that I have what it takes to be a part of this organization, and still, it is a little nerve-wracking to think of all the new people that will be around me and the pressure that I will have to become a responsible member of the society. However, I know that this challenge will be just what I need to grow my weaknesses and support those I care about all the more. When an opportunity presents itself, no matter how frightening it may seem to step out of your comfort zone and take that chance, you have to go for it. Becoming part of the NHS will allow me to discover parts of my community that I did not know existed, and meet new friends. Together, we will support one another and work to make even more of a difference in all our communities than we ever thought possible. Just like the pillars of the NHS, one person alone cannot hold the community together. Having good grades and being an avid scholar is amazing, but combined with powerful leadership skills, a passion for service, and a strong sense of community, anything is possible. The same goes for all the members of the
