NORAD and its political, economic, and social effects on Canada.
Ever since its establishment in 1958, NORAD has had a great deal of impact on the social, economic, and political values in Canada. With its original purpose being to defend Canada and The US from Soviet invasions/attacks, it quickly became one of the leading organizations in defence among the two neighbouring countries by intercepting any possible threats above the airspace, even over the surrounding oceans, but also a very controversial one.
The roots leading up to NORAD stretch back to the height of the Cold War in 1954 when 194 radar detectors were built across the northern part of Canada to detect any presence of Soviet …show more content…

NORAD’s focus/mission was changed in 1996 when the new agreement included a consultative mechanism for issues concerning aerospace defence cooperation and a provision for the review and management of environmental practices related to NORAD operations. NORAD also assists civil authorities in detecting and monitoring drug trafficking within aircrafts. It failed to maintain part of its responsibility in 2001 when 9/11 happened. Immediately after the attacks on the Twin Towers, NORAD started Operation Noble Eagle. Noble Eagle aims to protect North American airspace against further events. NORAD added maritime missions in May 2006 and from its renewal in 2001 to June 2006, it had responded to 2,100 potential threats and flew 42,00 sorties with military aircraft. The political, economical, and social controversies and impacts-- both good and bad-- NORAD has had. And through all these controversies and impacts, NORAD

continues to fulfill its responsibility and keep both Canada and The United States a safer, greater place for all of its 370 million people.
