Nadia Comaneci is a gymnast who competed in the 1976 Montreal summer Olympics. She changed the world of gymnastics along with how women were viewed. Without her involvement, gymnastics might still be an unknown sport to most. She is revolutionary because she brought popularity to the sport, refined the standards of gymnastics, and she gave women everywhere the courage to pursue their dreams.
Nadia Comaneci made women’s gymnastics more well known by joining a sport formerly dominated by men. She scored a perfect 10 during the Olympic Games and by doing so, she inspired many to join gymnastics. When she began practicing, the sport was mainly for men. She was rewarded with the Hero of Socialist Work award, which is the highest award given by the Romanian government (“Nadia Comaneci”). To earn the award, she did a lot of work between the U.S. and Romania to strengthen their relationships (Nordheim). Thusly, women were shown that they would be appreciated for their work because the government recognized Nadia for her actions. She is the only person to receive the Olympic Order two times; this is the highest award given by the International Gymnastics Committee, and she is the youngest recipient (Nordheim). Other female gymnasts try to beat this achievement, which gives them the courage to be more bold in their competitions. Nadia sparked interest for many women after being honored with these two titles. During that time, females were still not as recognized as men (“Nadia Comaneci”).
