Napoleon Bonaparte I chose Napoleon Bonaparte because he played a big part in the French Revolution and in the Enlightenment period. The chose the website Biography.com. This website gives a detailed account of who Napoleon was and his military career. The website also gives details of his childhood. The website also has links to videos of Napoleon with family, as a general and as an emperor.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born in August, 1769 in France to Carlo and Letizia Buonaparte (Biography.com). Napoleon was the first emperor of France and a military leader. The Napoleonic Code was also known as the French Civil Code. Under the Napoleonic Code government jobs were given to those who were qualified and not because it was your birthright. The code also gave religious freedoms. During his reign he reinstated the Roman Catholic religion as the state religion and negotiated European peace (Biography.com).
The Napoleonic wars lasted from 1803 to 1815. During this time France sold the Louisiana territory for $15 million in order to fund the war, this was known the Louisiana Purchase. Napoleon invaded Russia which turned out to be a failure. During the invasion many of Napoleon’s men were slaughtered. Napoleon was left with 10,000 of his 600,000 troops (Biography.com). With the failed invasion came Napoleon’s surrender. Napoleon was forced out of power and exiled.
Napoleon was married twice. His first marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais, who was a widow with two young daughters. This marriage ended in an annulment when she was unable to produce a male heir for Napoleon. His second marriage was to a very young woman, Marie-Louise. Marie-Louise gave Napoleon a son, Napoleon
