Napoleon Bonaparte was many things, Corsican, a husband, a military general, and an emperor of France. It is said that Napoleon was one of the greatest military leaders and because of this he dominated Europe for twenty years. From the start being a military man wasn't a very promising career, since he was a "foreign" nobility that meant he couldn't rise high in the ranks and pay was very low. (Connelly) After graduating from École Militaire 42nd out of 58th in his class, his first assignment was sub lieutenant of the artillery in France. (Connelly) Then from 1791-1793 he bounced back and forth from being a part of the Corsican National Guard and the French Army. (Connelly) After his family was exiled from Corsica he went back to the France Army and stayed there. (Connelly) The first thing that put Napoleon's military career on the map was the victory at Fort Eguillette. (Connelly) After that he and his army protected the Convention from royalist trying to stop it, which lead to his promotion to general. (Connelly) Once promoted general he was given command of the Army of Italy; his army was very disorganized and not combat ready. (Connelly) It is said that at this job the cards were stacked against him but Napoleon pulled through and was prepared for his command. (Connelly) Napoleon enforced discipline and interacted with troops differently offering promotions and better conditions.
