What is Personality?
Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving; Consistent with a set of ‘traits’. Most people have flexible personalities, allowing us to learn and adapt to new environments. Usually, those with personality disorders, are missing that flexibility.
What is a Personality Disorder?
An enduring, rigid pattern of inner experience and outward behavior that impairs sense of self, emotional experience, goals, and capacity for empathy and/or intimacy and often lead to psychological pain for the individual or others.

The term originated as a metaphor of self-absorption and inability to love into a specialized psychoanalytic term.
In Ovid’s myth, Narcissus is an attractive young man who rejects the approach of many potential lovers. After Narcissus denies the nymph, Echo’s unrequited love, the gods punish him. Narcissus is forced to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. He eventually dies, unloved back and alone. In some myths, Narcissus turns into the flower.
Diagnosis
Narcissistic personality disorder is diagnosed based on a psychological evaluation.
