NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY
THE STORY OF NARCISSUS The term ‘Narcissism’ is derived from the Greek myth of Narcissus. The story of Narcissus is presented in Metamorphoses of Ovid. Narcissus was a hunter who was known for his handsome look. He was the son of river god Cephissus and nymph Liriope. He was proud and rejected whoever loved him. Echo, the mountain nymph loved him and started following him. Once Narcissus was walking in a forest, there he felt that someone was following him. It was Echo, who followed him. She revealed her identity and tried to embrace him. He stepped away and asked her to leave him. After this, the heart-broken Echo spent her life in glens. Nothing but an echo sound remained of her. Nemesis, who was watching this, attracted Narcissus towards a pool where he fell in love with his own image without knowing that it was his own reflection. Unable to leave the beauty of himself, Narcissus drowned.
