Francis demonstrates he is not a hero through his words, thoughts, and actions, in the book Heroes by Robert Cormier. Francis is not considered a hero through his actions because he fails to help or save Nicole. As Larry LaSalle tells Francis to go home Nicole convinces him to stay. While Terry Malloy is considered a hero in the movie On the Waterfront for also going against rules. Malloy would be considered a rough kid who got into a bad situation with a group of mugs while working on the dock, not only does he save the day for himself but for others that are working on the docks as well. Antigone and Terry both go against rules for what they believe is right and become heroes.
But a hero isn’t just defined by their superpowers or what book they come from, it’s the choice to do the right thing even if it means getting hurt in the process. Heroes don’t have to be from a book or a movie franchise. Heroes can be ordinary people thrust into impossible situations or one who sticks their neck out to save yours. Take the nameless French girl from Elie Wiesel’s Night for instance. She slipped him a small piece of bread after Elie got beat by Idek, a guard.
What is a hero? When people think hero they think of capes, people with superpowers, crime stoppers. What is an actual hero and how do people define them.
