Narrative:
Kankakee, Illinois has so much potential for change. Kankakee is a 100% urban city in Illinois and is located about 45 minutes from the south side of Chicago. Kankakee has been known to some as a very southern suburb, but it is not. Kankakee is a part of a separate tri-city area and is not included in the southern suburbs of Chicago. I will always remember hearing a recording, years ago, of Jay Leno saying that Kankakee is one of the worst places to live. Kankakee is often talked about in a negative way. Whether it is from the residents or those who visit the area, but the fact remains that there is an abundance of potential in its people and in the city. 4. How often or little would you say that youth use these facilities that they have access to?
5. What is your opinion about Kankakee’s Public School System, in regard to youth violence and delinquency? Resource assessment:
Kankakee Park District- activities for youth and adults, mainly attended during summer camp for younger kids.
Bradley Park District- activities for youth and adults, mainly attended during summer camp for younger kids.
Bourbonnais Park District- activities for youth and adults, mainly attended during summer camp for younger kids.
YMCA-activities for babies-adults (sports and fitness are their main crowd draw)
YWCA- mainly used for daycare and preschool purposes for childcare
Sportsplex- only used by those in Kankakee Junior High
Youth for Christ-City Life Program, which Kankakee High School student spoke highly about They come into KHS often and promote their activities. They also bring fliers and send text messages to those interested in knowing about their events.
Garden of Prayer- youth through teen, afterschool and summer
