As I nervously got off the bus, I started looking for my friends and trying to figure out where I was supposed to line up, wondering what middle school would be like. Was it really as horrible as everyone made it out to be? Almost all the media portrayed it as a terrible, miserable place, and my elementary school teachers had not helped to improve the picture. My teachers had often spoke about how in middle school, the teachers would never accept this and in middle school the teachers will never tolerate that. The way they spoke about middle school, it seemed as if you stepped one foot out of line, or if your work was not college level, the middle school teachers would put you in detention for weeks. There were two houses, all named after London Underground lines, for each grade that the students were sorted into randomly using a computer. Maddy, Abby, and I had found out a few weeks earlier that we were all in Victoria. The teachers led us into the gymnasium, where they told us which homebase we were in. Maddy and Abby were in Ms. Payette’s homebase and I was in Mr. Bloom’s. The students in my homebase were led to our homebase room and given our schedules, locks, and lockers. Then, we went around to all our different classes and were told about the school and class rules. I was relieved to discover that my teachers were all friendly and that their class rules were not very different from the rules in elementary school. Mr. Bloom even sang a silly song to present his class rules. Students would only be given detention if they misbehaved multiple times in one class, and the work expectations were reasonable. Although every school year has a few challenges, middle school turned out to be a pleasant
