As much as we would like to, we can’t plan for everything. Not matter what the situation may be, things happen long before we are aware of them and it’s only within our control to make the best of it. One way I’ve made the most out of a decision I couldn’t control was when my parents moved us from Naperville, Illinois, a place I grew up and lived in for 15 years of my life, to Bakersfield, California. The thought of change terrified me because Naperville was the only place I had ever known. The first time the idea of moving was brought up was when I was in fifth grade. One day, my parents asked out of the blue how I would feel about moving away. My immediate response was of course no, why would I want to move? I loved my school, my teachers, my house, and most importantly, my friends. I had everything I wanted. They didn’t push much after that, they weren’t too serious about it after all. My mom had received a job offer in a different state but they both agreed that with how young my siblings and I were, now was not the right time for us to move. I knew that if I wanted someone to sit with I would have to be direct. I decided to say hi to the girl who was sitting next to me which turned out to be a good decision, because after hearing I was new, she immediately asked if I wanted to join her for lunch. I wanted to cry of relief, but I managed to play it cool. She introduced me to her friends who she told me she sat with since freshman year.
