The minute hand on the clock ticked by slowly. Just half a minute more before the harmonious scream of the students would fill up the exam hall. Just a month ago, cramming my head with notes and formula seemed like an impossible feat. However, there I was, sitting beside the grand entrance, subconsciously counting the days that await me during the school break. As the final second struck 12, everyone handed in their final paper. The battle to conquered Malaysia’s national examination known as the Certificate of Malaysian Education finally ended. Thus, the long-awaited 6 months break became the talk of the town.

After much consideration, I decided to partake in three distinctive activities: acquiring my driver’s license, working and volunteering. The entire month of November and December was devoted to driving and getting my license. Personally, being able to drive was the ultimate freedom; Hours were spent on the road to fully prepare me for the final exam with the officers. Engines died, cons were hit and patience was tested throughout the entire month of December.

Competitive colleagues stole my customer and gave away the clothes I had originally put aside for my customer to her own customer was the usual banter that occurred in the corner shop downtown. Regardless, working in retail, be it a high-end shop or a small town boutique down the street, one thing is clear – engaging the customers is important.
