Our story begins with Doug, who was a slave on a remote mining site in the middle of Alaska. He and his friend Joe, along with 286 other slaves would work from 6 am to 11 pm each day in a deep coal mine for their owner; Donald. It was a hard working life but Doug figured out a way to get out. But of course any story isn’t that quick or simple, Doug ran into a bigger problem as he left the site, which we will soon find out. On August 27th 2014 Doug and Joe were woken up by another whip right on the back by Donald, they were ordered to get straight to the mine and get to work, having no choice they went, and picked up their rusty steel pickaxes. But that day was the day Doug was waiting for, a letter came in the mail that day which said "To Doug Smith” when Doug opened it and read it stated this following message: “Doug Smith, you are a Canadian citizen, in here is your Citizenship Card, and your passport.” After reading that he went to Old el Paso’s office and said his goodbyes and thank yous, Old el Paso asked, “What about your friend?” “I don’t know,” said Doug, “he has been very harsh over the past few weeks,” “Okay, well goodbye Doug.” said Old el Paso, “Bye!” said Doug, he took his train money and went out the door. So off Doug went to the border, which was only 3 minutes away from the motel. He showed his info and was let through, he walked over to the train station and got out his $20, after a little wait the train came. He gave the conductor his money and he was let on. On his way he met a fellow named Jack who told him that he is from Vancouver, and they need lots of firefighters because of the wildfires, Doug saw this as an opportunity and became good friends with Jack.
