Cancer, high cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension have been a prevalent health problem in my family for generations. Knowing this information has led me to believe that I am at an increased risk of several chronic diseases and therefore should be rather careful of my forming habits that won’t elevate my risk any further. My grandpa passed away in his late thirties from a very rare form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, while my grandmother passed away in her early sixties from breast cancer. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet them to inquire if they had any unhealthy habits that increased their risk for cancer. Watching my mother’s vision gradually decline due to her diabetes has persuaded me to reduce my intake of sweets. I try to minimize my intake of fast food and empty calories such as pizza and fried chicken wings to once a month instead of once every two weeks. I cook healthy, nutritious meals at home 4 to 5 days a week, I often bake or stir fry chicken thighs, salmon, shrimp, vegetables such as cabbage or kale, and have fruits for dessert in replacement of ice cream. Unfortunately, I do not exercise as much as I would like, I go indoor rock climbing once a week for one hour and walk around the neighborhood every other day for 30 minutes. In regards to stress, I would consider my stress level to be at a fairly low baseline. I understand in order to combat my risk for diabetes it’s crucial that I lose excess body fat. My current diet is not considered the healthiest and would need to be altered in order to lose weight. I would need to reduce my calorie intake by at least 500 calories per day if I would like to see some weight loss. A vital part of staying healthy would also be to have regular check ups with my primary physician and drink plenty of water. In order to reduce my risk for high blood pressure, I can minimize salt intake in my diet and limit the alcohol that I consume at social events. Often times when I cook at home, I tend to cook with more than necessary amounts of sugar and salt, which I can cut out or reduce. I cannot completely reduce my risk for cancer, however I could enact some preventative measures such as protecting my skin from sun damage and eating a healthy and balanced
