When I was a child, my family would tell me stories about my grandmother. I would hear how she raced down nineteen flights of stairs because my sister, who was a child at the time, accidently entered the elevator and went down by herself. If my family was going through difficult times, she was there to make sure everyone got out unharmed. My grandmother was an immortal woman, who could do anything and survive anything thrown her way. That was, until the last test came her way, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In an instant, our happy family was hit with an impossible task.

One night, while I was studying at home, I got some sad news, my grandfather had died of a brain tumor. We knew that he had cancer, our family in India informed us about the situation. However, we expected him to survive, he had survived having his leg shattered by a metal bar, he had worked to become a highly valued employee at his job. Even the operation in which the surgeons removed the tumor was considered a success. Yet, he died, quietly and peacefully leaving us in his sleep. When I heard this news I was devastated, another person in my family died due to cancer. That night, I decided that I needed to become a doctor, and prevent the same kind of tragedies from affecting others. Thus, I volunteered to help in my local hospital’s emergency department.
As a volunteer at Alexian Brothers hospital, I was tasked with filling out paper work, restocking supplies and taking samples to the lab. However, on more than one occasion, I was able to interact with the patients in the emergency department. During these times, I worked to console them, and asked if they needed anything. In these situations, I was on the other side of the story, providing a small amount of care to the patients, in return, I could see glimpses of relief on their faces. If I could provide a small amount of care as a volunteer, then I should be able to provide full relief as a
