The sleek silver painted, carved wooden car sped down the track. A blue number one flew down as the black wheels carried it to the finish line. My six year old self was thrilled with excitement. Now 17, as that little silver car sits on a shelf I am an Eagle Scout. Sitting around the campfire with 27 merit badges sewed on my sash, I am a life Scout at age 13. Laying down logs to start a campfire for the next meal, I watch the younger Scouts put little twigs in and finally make a spark to start the fire that will last us the rest of the evening. Moving from the roaring flames we set up the axe yard as we take a full swing of the axe we heard the crack of the wood as the logs split into two. Calling companies to donate materials, collecting 200 bricks, and several pounds of dirt brought me to the day I broke ground on my project. The sun pounded down on us at a steady 90 degrees. My friends were there helping me wearing work boots, jeans, long sleeve shirts, and gloves. Loading the truck the necessary materials for the day, I started to feel a warm feeling of accomplishment and excitement before everything even started. We drove to the site where we began to mix 80 pounds of concrete, digging into the rock filled ground, and stacking the brick one by one on top of another to build the column. I envision this column with a stone top and dignified plaque which would commemorate the Chiefs of Countryside Fire District. As my friends and I began to drip bullets of sweat, the project was going up and the sense of accomplishment was near. 220 hours later, through calling, organizing, executing and leading the project nearly completed. Three days later, I went back to the project where it stood by the fire station waiting for the finishing touch.
