As I was walking up to the door of Memorial , I was surprised to see that everything seemed very low key. Where was all the hipe, the pomp, the hord’s of parents and concerned citizens of Joplin and the surrounding area? School board meetings are a great forum to partake in to find exactly how, why , and with what recources your school district conducts its business. I sat on the second to the last row and made sure I was not in the range of the media. The board members came into the room and perused through the twenty or so people sitting and waiting for the meeting to start. They shook hands and politely smiled and waved at people they knew. Upon looking at her, there was nothing that stood out about her. She wore jeans and a t-shirt, her hair was curly and several different colors. Once she gathered her barings , shaky words emerged from her lips. It took me a minute to figure out why and what she was saying. The young middle schooler was there to plead for the schools to be allowed to have church group meetings. This is the very reason I thought it would be a wild and rucus school board meeting. You know, like the ones you see on tv. People everywhere talking over each other and hands flailing as they are trying to get their point across. To my disappointment , the little girl said her speech and people clapped and that was it. I thought to myself, really? That is it and the meeting resumed. The outline on my paper was listed from A to H with sub sections of each of these. If you strained your ears hard enough you could vaguely hear what exactly they were saying. In my opinion the only person I was able to understand at all was the middle school girl. So I sat there with my head cocked and tried to make sense of the bits and pieces I did hear. The members addressed each area one by one. There were updates on everything from Saftey, Salary, Benefits, Data Analysis,
