Imagine this, five seconds left on the clock in the Nebraska State Championship game. The Sutherland Sailors are down by six points and need a touchdown to win. They luckily have the ball on the opposing teams one-yard line. The sailors quickly break the huddle and run to the line, as time is quickly running off the clock the center snaps the ball to the quarterback. As soon as he touches the ball he puts the ball up on his shoulder indicating that it is a pass. The pocket quickly collapses and he has no choice but attempt to extend the play. The quarterback scrambles to the right and sees an open receiver. He quickly throws him the ball and he catches it. The Sutherland Sailors have just won the State Championship. The Sutherland Sailors were going to face Maxwell in the season opener. To start the game, the Sailors kicked the ball to the Wildcats. They caught the ball and ran to the fifteen-yard line before they got tackled. On the Wildcats first play they handed the ball off to their running back and he ran past the Sailor defenders and scored from sixty yards out. The Sailors were stunned; they never thought the game was going to end up like that. Eventually in the game, they retaliated by having some big runs to bounce back into the game. On the last play before halftime, Sutherland’s quarterback scrambled right, threw the ball sixty yards for his wide receiver to catch. The referee threw his hands in the air indicating a touchdown but another referee talked to him and changed his call to short, the Sailor football player was down on the one-yard line. At halftime the score was 32-12. The coach of the Sailors came over to the team and said, “We can play with this team, we are not down much and we can battle back.” The team was ready for the second half. The sailors had the ball, they tried running the ball, and passing the ball. Nothing would work for the Sailor offense. They were forced to punt the ball very often. Finally, the Sailors offense started to click, they began to score decently well, but Maxwell’s offense was also working. Maxwell was just too much for Sailors. This would be the Sailors last home opener. They were playing a huge rival: Paxton. It was a very exiting game, the sailors elected to receive first so they got the ball. On the first drive, the Sailors punched one into the end zone. They took their first lead of the season. On the next play, the Sailors kicked the ball to Paxton. The football player returning the ball for Paxton dodged some Sailor defenders and ran it in for a touchdown. The rest of the game Paxton just kept building a lead, at the start of the fourth quarter the score was 38-24. The Sailors were starting to lose moral. The only reason they kept playing hard was because of their Sailor pride. In the fourth quarter the Sailor came alive! They scored very smoothly. The Sailors came back and were only down 6 points with a minute left. Sutherland’s quarterback got the snap and scrambled left and saw an open receiver, he threw the ball very far. The wide receiver caught the ball and scored! The Sailors now tied up the game. Time ran out and the game went into overtime. Both teams scored in overtime and missed the two-point conversion. They were forced to go into second overtime. Paxton got the ball first. It only took them two plays before they got back into the end zone. Yet again, they missed the 2-point conversion. Now, the Sailors had the ball, on the very first play they handed it off to their running back, he juked players out
