Personal Narrative Essay: My Love For Soccer

After driving a good twenty minutes, we took the exit ramp. Even with the bright lights of all the cars, street lamps, and buildings, the Legends still felt dark and cold. After a couple weeks of beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s, this Saturday night, the temperature sat around a chilly 30 degrees. We navigated through the Legends until reaching the T-Bones stadium, where we pulled in to park. I was bundled up in a variety of clothes. The first of five layers began with a tight fitting blue long sleeve t-shirt, then a navy t-shirt with the Sporting KC logo, then a large grey long sleeve t-shirt, then a pink hoodie, and to top it all off I wore a military green utility jacket with pockets for my pair of thick winter gloves. Ever since Christmas Day, when my grandmother gave Jason money for a few Sporting KC games, we planned to go to Sporting’s home opener. Jason and I talk about soccer scores and news constantly, resulting in one of our closest bonding points. We also follow soccer in Europe, especially in England. He roots for Chelsea and I root for Manchester City. Every time these teams in England play we talk about the best goals scored, and all the results of the games. Not to mention relentlessly trash talking each other about teams and players that we disagree on. While this results in some bitter arguments, ultimately our love for soccer brings us closer together. Jason and I also argue about where we should sit. I want to sit in the wild crazy loud fan section, the Cauldron. Unfortunately, Jason is pretty shy and introverted, so all the standing, chanting, and rowdiness would make him uncomfortable. We settled on buying tickets in the normal stand, but I persuaded him to let us sit as close to the Cauldron as possible. We bought the tickets mid-February, so about a month before the game.
