Novel Essay: Steps of Narrative Structure Following the steps of narrative structure is important when writing a novel. Narrative structure is way for an author to present events in a story. Ray Bradbury used it in a way for the reader to understand the story of Fahrenheit 451. In any novel there is a beginning, middle, and end. Bradbury used the steps of narrative structure of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution so that we were able to understand the story. One of the steps of narrative structure is exposition. Exposition is composed at the beginning of a story to give background information on the characters, and the setting of the story. First, I was able to establish who were Guy Montag and Clarisse McClellan. This was important because they were the main characters of the novel. Montag was a fireman who burn books, and Clarisse is the seventeen-year-old girl who lived next to Montag. Second, the setting was in the future where books were outlawed. Every novel has a beginning, middle, and end. Resolution is the end of the novel and should answer most questions that the reader may have. For example, Granger explained to Montag they can remember the books rather than keep paper copies. Instead of carrying around books they were able to remember the text within a book so they can write it down later. Next, cities around the world were destroyed. This would give the men purpose and this would support their idea to spread the text from the books. Another example, Granger spoke about the words he would say once they have reached the city.
