Nathaniel “Nat” Turner was born a slave on October 2, 1800 on a plantation. Nat became a preacher who said that he had been chosen by God to lead the slaves away from Bondage. On August 21, 1831 he had lead a violent insurrection. Nat hid for several weeks but was finally found and hung. The incident ended the Emancipation movement in that region and had lead to much harder laws against slaves.

Nat Turner made history as the leader of one of the most Bloodiest slave revolts in America. Nat was born on a Virginian Plantation By Benjamin Turner, who let him be instructed in religion, writing and reading. Nat’s mother’s name was Nancy. Although, nothing was known about Nat’s father.

When Nat was a small child he always thought to a special talent because he could describe things that happened before he was born. People even said that “He Would Become a Prophet” according to one of his confessions. Nat’s Mom and Gramma told him that he “Was Intended For Great Purposes”. Nat had run away from Samuel Turner, his former Owner’s Brother in 1821. After several days, Nat came back to the Plantation after he received, what he believed was, a sign from God. After Samuel Turner’s death, Nat had become a slave of Thomas Moore. When she married John Travis, Nat had went to work on Travis’s land.

Nat had planned to go to Jerusalem and take over the armory there. He and his men foiled the plan. They faced off in a battle of armed White men at a Plantation near Jerusalem, and the conflict soon turned into a mass of chaos. Nat himself had fled into the woods.

While he hid, White mobs took their revenge on the Blacks. Nat was eventually caught on October 30, 1831, he was represented by Lawyer Thomas R. Gray who wrote down Nat’s confession. Nat pled not guilty during his trial. He was sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out on November 11,
