Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American author who is most famous for writing The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. He was born July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts as Nathaniel Hathorne. He later added the “w” later in his life to distinguish himself from his ancestors, such as John Hathorne, who dappled in the Salem witch trials. After graduating from college, Hawthorne submerged himself in researching his ancestral roots and his Puritan past. His research helped to push him into writing his many stories. The first literary work that Hawthorne attempted to publish was a collection of many short stories. However, he failed in doing so and ended up feeding the fire some bed-time stories. His first published work, ¬Fanshawe, was not published under Hawthorne’s own name. It was, in fact, published anonymously in 1828. The first story that Hawthorne published under his own name was Twice-Told Tales. This occurred in 1837, some nine years after his first published literary work, and ended up being a big success. During the five years after publishing Twice-Told Tales, Hawthorne moved around often with his wife, eventually landing in Concord, Massachusetts. …show more content…

During Hawthorne’s productive year and a half following The Scarlet Letter, he manages to write The House of Seven Gables. Shortly after that book was published, he was also able to publish The Blithedale Romance in 1852. Despite being busy writing all of his major works, Hawthorne found time to write stories for children based on Greek myths. Hawthorne also found time to develop a friendship with Franklin Pierce, the fourteenth president, which led to him writing a campaign biography for Pierce. Later in his life, Hawthorne took a trip with Pierce to his New Hampshire home and ended up passing away there. Hawthorne’s last day was May 19, 1864. He was about to be sixty when he
