National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP): Throughout American history, the African American people have suffered through many trials and tribulations. Before America declared independence from Great Britain, captured Africans were sent to the land and worked in the fields as slaves. In fact, the African Americans were enslaved for over two centuries dating from 1625 when the first slaves were brought over by to the Dutch to January 1, 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. In addition, African Americans have dealt with segregation, racial discrimination, and inequality. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is one of the oldest and predominate civil rights organizations in America advocated against segregation, racial discrimination and inequality. Origination of the NAACP According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed partly in response to the continuing horrific practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois. Surprisingly the vast majority of the founding members were actually white Americans. In fact, seven out of the original sixty members were African American.
