There are 128 FBS college football teams and each year just 1 is able to walk away a National Champion. This has always been the case in college football, however the way this National Champion is crowned has changed a few times. Whether it be the AP Poll deciding the number 1 team in their rankings, the numbers 1 and 2 teams playing each other in a championship game, or a 4 team playoff, 1 team always walks away a champion. Over the years there has been a lot of debate over which teams deserve a chance to play for a National Championship game. No matter the system people are arguing over who should be ranked first, second, or fourth. The debates seems to never stop. Now that there is a 4 team playoff people have begun to discuss expanding the playoff to 6, 8, or even 16 teams. Some people, like Washington State head coach Mike Leach are maybe taking this idea a little too far demanding for a 64 team playoff. “I don’t know why you don’t have 64 teams,” Leach said. “... The notion of pinpointing and selecting four perfectly, well that’s not going to happen. That can’t happen effectively.”(Leach Quote) In Leach’s idea of a perfect system there is a 10 game regular season with a 64 team playoff. This is likely to never happen for multiple reasons. The whole idea of a playoff is to get all the best teams that have a legitimate shot at a national championship and let them play each other for it. If anyone truly believes that there are 64 teams that can win the championship then they’re out of their minds. Not to mention these are 18-22 year old kids that also need time to go to classes so a 10 game season plus a conference championship and 6 tournament games for the 2 teams that go the distance would be a total of 17 games which would not allow their bodies to get the rest it needs and they would not be able to get proper
