But I have learned that we are paving the way for us to get a better future and that is the best award of them all. My interest in Japanese arts and culture has propelled me to live in Tokyo during my gap year between high school and college. Staying with a local family, I explored many aspects of Japanese culture not only by auditing at local high schools but also by learning Japanese traditional art style, wood printmaking. My stay at Tokyo has later persuaded me to return to Tokyo after graduation. While at Penn, I continued my exploration through joining the Japanese Student Society and taking advanced Japanese language courses. As someone who foresees herself pursuing a career in Tokyo after graduation, I was very pleased to learn of the Global Internship Program (GIP) in Tokyo from my Japanese professor.

I want to be part of the yearbook staff for next year because I think that taking this class would improve my skills in many different fields, such as writing, grammar, design, speech, and social skills. Besides the academic aspects, I also feel that taking yearbook would allow me to socialize more and find out about different people and their interests. I feel that I can contribute to the success of next year’s book in many different ways. I’ve always loved to design things, write, and be social, so I knew taking yearbook would be the perfect class for me. Talking to people comes very naturally to me.
I have always had the curiosity to find to explore things to be organized to get involved with something, that is why I want to be a Businesswoman or an Interior Designer. It is an extraordinary honor to be considered as a candidate for the National Honor Society. Being considered means I have achieved my goal in demonstrating my determination- in school and outside of school- and my willingness to aid people in my community. Being a part of such a prestigious organization is an enormous responsibility to which I will fully devote my time. Ever since I was a freshman, my goal was to work diligently to be among the highest scholars and to be accepted into this scholarly “hall of fame”. Through my relentless hard work and perseverance, I believe that I possess the four characteristics of a National Honor Society member- leadership, service, character, and scholarship.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been on a journey and had a drive, to improve myself. Along the way, I discovered my fondness for the science of things and an electrifying wit, but I also witnessed a glimpse of my future in the digital world. My journey continues and I now find myself in a new country, as a computer science major at UMES, but that drive to improve myself never fazed me. Hence, I am applying to the Honors Program because I believe it will improve me and help me contribute to the Honors community.
Abraham Lincoln said, “If you are determined to make a lawyer of yourself, the thing is more than half done already.” Throughout my life, people have tried to tell me I would never amount to anything. I’ve spent my whole life determined on proving them wrong. The child of immigrants who never went to high school, I’ve become the first to graduate and even think about going to a college or university let alone make it a reality.
