National Patient Safety Goals
Preventing Infection Preventing infections is one of the major National Patient Safety Goals listed by the Joint Commission. The other National Patient Safety Goals include using two patient identifiers, improving staff communication, using medications safely, using alarms safely, identifying patient safety risks, and preventing mistakes in surgery. The Joint Commission created the National Patient Safety Goals as a way to reduce medical errors after multiple issues had been brought to their attention (Chinn, S., 2014).
Description of NPSG Goal According to the Joint Commission, the National Patient Safety Goal of preventing infections was created to “reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections” (Murphy-Knoll, L. 2007). By saying this, the Joint Commission is simply trying to get healthcare workers to do everything in their power to do what they can to decrease infections in the hospital. Infections are the number one cause of death worldwide, in which most of the infections could have been prevented, so by implementing this goal millions of lives could be saved worldwide (Murphy-Knoll, L. 2007).
Interventions to Address Goal There are multiple types of healthcare associated infections, which the risk for can all be reduced. Nurses as well as other medical professionals can reduce the risk of central line infections, surgical site infections, multi-drug-resistant organisms, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and many more. The most effective way to reduce all healthcare associated infections is simply by thoroughly washing your hands. Washing hand for at least 15 seconds with soap and warm water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can easily reduce the risk of infections when working with patients by eliminating the microorganisms that are
