After reading Native Americans and the “Middle Ground,” I realized how narratives of historians are quick to shame and blame Native Americans in history. This article begins by revealing how European settlement presented the Indians as obstacles. Recent historians, such as Gary Nash, show the Native Americans as being conquered by the Europeans. Author of The Middle Ground, Richard White, seems to be one of the first to examine the culture of Native Americans and the relationship between colonists. White writes about the “middle ground” of the politics and trade that is eventually established.
The Seminole legend “Two Hunters” introduced by Betty Mae Jumper presents the short story of two hunters on a hunting trip that highlights the consequences and life lessons of parsimonious hunting. In the Seminole legend by Betty Mae Jumper two hunters are on a trip to hunt and bring food back to their families, they embark on a journey to a big lake to gather the food necessary to support their families. One of the rules made known from the beginning of the legend is “ They only hunted when they had to, when the meat supply had run out”. (Jumper, pg.1). Meaning that the hunters only hunted and killed when the meat was needed or scarce.
Alexie Sherman in “Smoke Signals” describes the way of living of Native Americans. He uses two characters in the movie as Native Americans Victor and Thomas. Thomas’s parents died in the accidental fire on Independence Day in 1976 in Coeur d’Alene, however, Arnold Joseph, Victor's father, saved Thomas from the fire. When Thomas was just blasted out of the window, Victor’s father miraculously caught Thomas before he landed on the ground. Thomas was a nerd who was smart, and he enjoyed telling stories to anyone.

Barbara Alice Mann, a professor at Toledo University and author of George Washington’s War on Native America, is known for her books on Native American history. However, all of her books should be read with caution, because she only uses one perspective in her books. On allamericanspeakers.com, all of her books listed were about Native Americans, yet all of her books contained the viewpoint of a Native American. Therefore, her books would suggest a biased view towards historical investigations.
In Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, Alexie’s father’s love for books grew to make his self-love books ending up in Alexie teaching himself how to read. Alexie describes the stereotypes and what is expected of Indian children and how Indian children were expected to basically have no knowledge Many lived up to those expectations inside the classroom but invalidated them on the outside. While other children were doing this, Alexie’s father was one of the few Indians on the reservation who went to Catholic School on purpose and was also an devoted reader. Alexie grew up around books. His father had a strong love for books as he bought them by the pound from pawn shops, goodwill and the salvation army.
Native American Research: Chief Pontiac Intro Chief Pontiac is a Native American that is important to the United States’ history. He was a part of the Ottawa tribe and led the American Indians to a revolution also known as the Pontiac War or Pontiac’s Rebellion, which was against the British when they first came to America. He wasn’t afraid to die for his rights. He believed that they all had rights to live in America and to live how they wanted to live. I chose him for my Native American Research because he was a courageous Native American hero.
“And I looked at my dad, I looked at my mom, I looked at my dad again. You know what? I hated them. I just absolutely hated my own parents. Not because I thought they abandoned me; I hated their brown faces.
They are trying to save their lives.” Although Sherman Alexie’s success seems as if it has only opened up doors for himself it did not, it opened up doors for other Indian kids that are still on the reservation. When Sherman Alexie wrote his books and poems the kids on the reservation read them. They gave them hope, he gave them a reason to fight for their lives the way he did. Those kids too started to write their own short stories and found the same joy in learning that Sherman Alexie did.
11:43 PM Hatred is poison - this is one of the major lessons that James Baldwin was trying to get across in his story "Notes of a Native son. " Baldwin's father always had hatred in his heart and no matter what he did, he always seemed angry and mean. He was simply a hateful person. He often lied that he was proud of his blackness, but, in reality, he was mostly humiliated by it. Baldwin's father even struggled to make friends.
The invisibility of Native peoples and lack of positive images of Native cultures may not register as a problem for many Americans, but it poses a significant challenge for Native youth who want to maintain a foundation in their culture and language. " - NCAI President Brian Cladoosby (April 2014 - Washington Post
Being a writer of many different styles, Sherman Alexie started off as a poet before writing novels and short stories. His poetic manner continues in the story “Indian Education”. He has a wide array of dry statements mixed with metaphors and statements that are not meant to be taken literally. The trend for each years is that he starts off dry and literal and ends poetic and metaphorical. His description of his interactions with the “white girl” in seventh grade is a great example.
Despite the negative stereotype of American Indians, the objections and disapproval of fellow Natives, and the criticism of others, Sherman Alexie went on to become a successful writer that has inspired many. Alexie overcame many obstacles that would have deterred him from his goal, but he was able to remain steadfast and continue on in his pursuit of writing. As a result, he has published many literary works that include several short stories, poems, and a variety of novels. He allows his culture to seep into his writing, and continues to inspire young American Indians who also desire the path of knowledge.
