“I always see America as really belonging to the Native Americans. Even though I’m American, I still feel like a visitor in my country” (Nicolas Cage). Throughout US history, Native Americans who have lived longer in America than many Americans do not truly adhere the same rights as Americans. During the 19th century, for example, a group known as the Plains Indians inhabited the Great Plains but were soon deprived of it by US settlers. When the government agreed on the Treaty of Fort Laramie, which was the first treaty between the government and the Plains Indians to recognize that the Indians owned the Great Plains, it was ignored when gold was discovered in 1858.
In 1775, most Native Americans generally were called savages and many people did not particularly want them on or even sort of more specifically living on U.S soil. But as the United States is dealing issues based on the pretty Revolutionary War, Native Americans are dealing with their own problems at this time in a major way. Native Americans faced a "New World" with the creation of the new United States of America. During the many years of conflict they faced before, Native American groups, like many other residents of North America, had to bravely choose the loyalist or patriot cause or somehow actually maintain a neutral stance. But the Native Americans for the most part had distinctive issues of their own trying to hold on to their homelands as well as maintain access to trade and supplies as war took over their
An ethical issue related to medical care is pain management and the inappropriate judgment of patients being labeled as “Drug Seeking”. There are statistics that prove there is a rise in abuse in opiates within communities. However, at what point does the nurse or provider get to decide what is an adequate pain threshold and how much they should endure? When does the ethical duty to relieve pain and suffering subside to personal biases?
The Indians did establish schools, develop written language and laws and even became sedentary farmers. Even though they had done all this to become a citizen they were still not recognized. They gave up hunting to adapt the European-American culture. The policy was designed to remove the Native Americans by the American government. The Indian Removal Act was not just created in the 1830’s but was culminated in the nineteenth century.
Other laws and treaties in the nineteenth century offered Indians the right to become an American citizen if they left the tribal setting and become a part of American society. But tribal identity was the one thing nearly every Indian wished to maintain, and very few took advantage of these offers. Thus, few Indians were recognized as American citizens. After WWI congress made all Native Americans US
From colonial times until the end of the Indian Wars in 1890, the people in America went through a series of unfair and unfortunate events. Mainly for the Indians which are also called the first peoples. These events could have been handled with much more consideration for the Indians. There are many times when the Americans went too far including the Removal Act of 1830, the Reservation System, and the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians.
Native Americans were greatly affected by the expansion of the United States during the 1800s. As the U.S. moved west, they stole large amounts of Native American land by settling the land and killing the Natives who once lived there. Also during this time, their culture was being taken from them due to assimilation. While United States citizens were expanding into the west, many Native American lives were lost. They were also responsible for destroying a major food and supply source for Native Americans.
Negative There were also negative consequences to having Native Americans on the British side. According to some British commanders, Native Americans were “unruly, uncontrollable, and could not be trusted in the heat of battle”. Native Americans were becoming more of a burden to the British as the war continued. They would often leave a battle to return home or would not listen to British commanding officers. Native Americans did not fight in the same manner as the British and some of their practices lead to mistrust and conflict with their British allies.
Indians were seen as a part of the citizen ship of the country as they were given the opportunity to enjoy the rights of all Americans. One such right was the ability to join the armed forces to defend the country in World War Two which gave the Native American a sense of belonging. Furthermore the Federal government through congress in 1946 acknowledged the fact that they had mistreated Native Americans and offered compensation to the tune of 800 million dollars which did more harm than good as it caused unwanted internal conflicts within tribes. Another development to improve life for Native Americans and its relationship with the government was the reintroduction of self governance which aimed to preserve the cultural predilection of Native Americans to tribal governance in which they are able to make and adhere to their own rules and
The way the government handled issues during land ordinance was handled in a positive way, but it had a negative impact on the native Americans. The colonies were getting overcrowded and there were less job opportunities for people so many decided to move out. The Native American land had been taken away from them, they were wiped out of their homes and it did involve violence. The map shows how much the colonist had expanded their land into the native American land. On the bright side the land the land had provided many affordable homes for people like the township.
During the late 15th and early 16th centuries, eExplorers from Europe had made vast advancements on traveling methods and shipbuilding and had new methods to travel the world. Due to needs for faster trade routes or access to new markets, most powers, starting with Portugal, had started sending Explorers to find different ways to trade and navigate. This would eventually lead them to the New World where they would meet people of different culture. Explorers during this period have many positive and negative effects on the natives. Europeans indirectly killed off native with diseases, enslaved natives with cruel slave methods, and tried to completely erase the native cultures in place of the typical European cultures and religion.
Adam Sorenson Prof. Riggs COMP 01112 2/12/18 Misrepresentation of Native Americans Native American’s for many years now have been viewed as lone warriors or squaw, some people don’t even know that they still exist! People just think of the Native American people in storybook tales and nothing more then that. They were here way before Christopher Columbus and the other European Colonists even discovered America and they are still present in the U.S.
