Dontae Joseph AP U.S. History Grade 11 Europeans had gone to the New World is search of wealth, power, or religious reasons, all had hoped for a better than in Europe. Religion was one of the reasons why the colonies had first developed, it helped create religious freedom and allowed people to continues their religious practice without persecution. However, not all the colonies had centered themselves around religion. In the early American colonies religion had a big impact on the development in the New England, Chesapeake, and Mid-Atlantic Colonies.
Freedom to Prosecute Religion Colonial America is often thought of as a safe haven from religious persecution. Future colonists had been persecuted for not accepting their countries ' religious doctrine and were willing to travel long distances in search of religious freedom. Religious freedom would still be far from grasp as Puritans would continue their homelands traditions of persecution for many more years. Puritans, unlike the Pilgrims (who sought to completely separate from the Church of England), wanted to purify the Church.
The French and the Spanish forged relationships with the Natives in terms of economy, culture and religion. Both sought profit through exploitation and trade of New World resources. The two nations also knew that the indigenous people would be very important assets to their success. In terms of religion, the French responded gently by encouraging Catholicism, befriended them and trade with them. The Spanish, on the other hand, oppressed religion onto the Native Americans responded harshly pertaining to economy.
Europeans exchanged letters to the royal throne, and claimed that by accumulating new territories it would further open the possibilities, and boundaries for Europe to expand their economy. This would also include bringing light to the indigenous cultures, and helping to maintain the balance of power in Europe, all in the name of God. This of course was a cover-up to allow them to fulfill their greed, and desire for status and wealth. The Europeans had an almost legitimate reason for being able to journey into the indigenous land.
Religion in the Southern colonies wasn’t as big of a deal like it was in the Middle, and Northern colonies. The main religion in the south was, Anglican. The economy in the south was like no other. The South has warm weather and a good amount of rainfall. The two main crops included: tobacco and rice.

In the late 1400s to 1500s, Europeans started the colonization and economic competitions each other between countries to get more assets since their resources and lands were limited and not enough. At that time, Spaniards and French had the same purpose for exploring the New World such as pursuing wealth, winning the economic competition, but they approached to Native Americans in different ways. The difference between these two countries when they encounter with Indians was the relationship with Native Americans. Spanish and Christopher Columbus were too absorbed on finding golds and slaves to make a thriving trade when Spain discovered the new land and met Native Americans.

English settlers were driven from England due to religious practices and perceived themselves as saving the Indians from the Spanish and their tyrannical ways. For the English, owning land would give men control over their own labor and the right to vote in most colonies, and this land possession would show wealth. This new obtained wealth would not only have demonstrated power, but it could also be used to influence a society a certain way to convince others to follow suit. The English believed that their motives for colonization were pure, and that the growth of empire and freedom would always go together, unlike the Spanish.
The Catholic Church and Latin America The Catholic Church was a great power ruling many civilizations in Europe during the period between 1492 and 1830. Therefore, the role of the Catholic Church was of utmost importance to the colonization and development of Latin America as it was a great force in Spain and Portugal. Despite the peaceful teachings of the Church, greed and a hunger for power led them to make decisions harming Latin America and Christianity, rather than thriving it. In this paper, I will show that the Catholic Church is significantly responsible for the colonization and development of Latin America through, the Christianizing mission, the Treaty of Tordesillas, and the Spanish Inquisition.
