In the United States for centuries, Native Americans have been a large controversial topic. Whether its has to do with moving them to reservations or when it comes to assimilating them into white culture, they have been looked down upon. In this day and age with all of the accepting of different culture and people in the United States, Native Americans and other organizations have been taking a stand to get rid of the racism and discrimination that these schools have caused. The governments of some states are planning to take action by forcing schools to change their mascots, nicknames, and even the school names all together, if they are depicted a stereotypical American Indian. In Michigan the government has already begun the process of removing any disrespect towards Native Americans in schools by forbidding them to certain events until they change the name. By raising this concern, a debate has begun that is over tradition, the sensitivity of a culture, and whether it's politically correct. They want to get rid of these American Indian stereotypical names on a national level. The associations wants to ban them immediately from every school, organization, college, and universities. The APA backs this up with the latest research that states that it is a negative portrayal of American Indians, causing racial stereotyping, and making it hard for not only young people who are Native American, but just young people in general to go to school without unfairness.
